At Melbourne Emergency Dental Clinic, we understand that dental emergencies involving your child can be incredibly stressful.

Our team is here to provide prompt, compassionate care when your little one needs it most. With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Edward Lee and our staff are equipped to handle even the most urgent paediatric dental situations.

Common Children’s Dental Emergencies

Dental injuries and mishaps are an unfortunate part of childhood. Some of the most common emergencies we treat include:

  • Chipped, cracked, or fractured teeth
  • Knocked-out (avulsed) teeth
  • Severe toothaches or abscesses
  • Bleeding gums or oral injuries

If your child has chipped or broken a tooth, remain calm and follow these steps:

  1. Rinse the area with warm water to clean it.
  2. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling if facial trauma occurs.
  3. Locate any tooth fragments and bring them with you.
  4. Call our clinic immediately at 03 9882 4556 to schedule an emergency visit.

A knocked-out permanent tooth requires prompt treatment to try and save it. Here’s what to do:

  1. Gently retrieve the tooth, holding it by the crown (top) not the root.
  2. Rinse off any debris with milk or saliva – do not scrub or remove any tissue fragments.
  3. Try to reinsert the tooth back into its socket and have your child gently bite down on gauze to hold it in place.
  4. If you can’t reinsert it, store the tooth in milk or inside your child’s cheek.
  5. Call immediately – we’ll make room for an emergency visit within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.

While losing a baby tooth isn’t as urgent, it’s still wise to seek guidance from our team.

Frequently Asked Questions

For serious trauma or excessive bleeding, an ER visit may be necessary first. For most dental injuries or tooth pain, however, it’s best to contact our emergency dentists directly for faster and more specialised treatment.

While baby teeth typically should not be replanted, we still recommend being seen promptly. This allows us to evaluate for any mouth or jaw injuries and ensure proper eruption for the permanent tooth isn’t impacted.

Remain calm and reassuring. Explain what to expect using simple terms. Avoid words that may cause anxiety. Bring a favourite toy, blanket, or music player to help keep them comfortable. We’ll take it from there!

Don’t let a children’s dental emergency cause more stress than it needs to. Contact us at 03 9882 4556 immediately and our compassionate, skilled team will promptly take care of your child’s urgent needs. You can also book an emergency appointment online anytime.
